Simon Dennis has been at Grateley House School for the past five years and is leaving this July to follow a National Diploma in Horse Management course at Sparsholt College. Here, in his own words, is how he feels about his achievements since starting at Grateley.

"When I first came to Grateley I felt scared and unsure what to do, who people were and what was expected of me. I came from a school that was for non-verbal students and spent most of my time with the staff there."

"At first, I found school difficult and spent most of my time walking out of class. There were a few lessons that I found interesting, like science, but not many."

"I had a huge anger problem and found it difficult to control it some of the time. The staff at Grateley have helped me in a lot of different ways, from in the classroom to managing my anger."

"I was given the chance to go pony trekking in the Brecon Beacons in 2005 as part of the school activity week and after that I decided that I would like to work with horses, so for the past year I have been at Sparsholt College, Winchester, studying the equine industry and following the Foundation Diploma in Horse Management and I have found something I'm good at and enjoy. Whilst there I completed my 'Riding Road Safety' exam. I find exams really difficult but the examiners were really pleased with my riding and competence on the road. I am also taking my 'BHS stage 1' exam in June."

"Sparsholt College have asked me to continue on to the National Diploma in Horse Management which is a two year course and I will have achieved the equivalent of three A levels at the end of the course."

Case Study One: Tom

'Tom' has severe learning difficulties and a diagnosis of autism. He is non-verbal, has negligible social interaction and averages P level 3.

Case Study Three: Jeremy

'Jeremy', 18, was too anxious to get out of bed when he first arrived at Broughton House College and had a concentration span of no more than 5 minutes.
