Acquiring coping mechanismsCambian work with our students to enable them to modify their methods of asking for things, gaining attention or coping with daily frustrations. Many of our students come to us with attendant challenging problems, from running away, or refusing to participate in activities, to hitting or biting staff, faeces eating or self-harming. All of these ‘challenging behaviours’ express a need: our non-aversive strategies discover the needs our students are expressing and offer them alternative methods of communicating those needs. See case history about Tom. We aim to develop positive strategies for our students using structure and predictability and by giving them boundaries.

Dignity ensured.Young people with ASD living in a residential setting have unique needs and requirments, especially when they reach puberty. Single room accomodation gives space for individual dignity and privacy. Students have time to be alone each day to relax from activites. We also have individual therapy rooms at each school. Cambian has a long reputation of caring for young people and providing the safe environment for our students to develop their sense of self worth. ![]() |
